1982 FIFA World Cup qualification (CAF)

Listed below are the dates and results for the 1982 FIFA World Cup qualification rounds for the African zone (CAF). For an overview of the qualification rounds, see the article 1982 FIFA World Cup qualification.

A total of 29 CAF teams entered the competition. However, Central African Republic was excluded by FIFA for not paying the entry fee. The African Zone was allocated 2 places (out of 24) in the final tournament.

There would be four rounds of play:

First round

Morocco advanced to the Second Round.


Zaire advanced to the Second Round.


Cameroon advanced to the Second Round.


Guinea advanced to the Second Round.


The aggregate score was tied at 2–2, but Nigeria won 4–3 on penalties, and so advanced to the Second Round.


Libya advanced to the Second Round.


Zambia advanced to the Second Round.


The aggregate score was tied 1–1, and Niger advanced to the Second Round due on away goals.


Algeria advanced to the Second Round.


Ghana withdrew, so Egypt advanced to the Second Round automatically.


Tanzania advanced to the Second Round.


Uganda withdrew, so Madagascar advanced to the Second Round automatically.

Second round

Libya withdrew, so Egypt advanced to the Third Round automatically.


Algeria advanced to the Third Round.


The aggregate score was tied 2–2, and Niger advanced to the Third Round due on away goals.


Guinea advanced to the Third Round.


Cameroon advanced to the Third Round.


The aggregate score was tied 2–2, and Morocco won 5–4 on penalties and advanced to the Third Round.


Nigeria advanced to the Third Round.


Zaire advanced to the Third Round.

Algeria advanced to the Final Round.


Nigeria advanced to the Final Round.


Morocco advanced to the Final Round.


Cameroon advanced to the Final Round.
